Chapter Eight

“Kenzie? Why? Why are ye wearing those things again?”

Candlelight danced across the floor, tickling back the hushed darkness. Barefoot, her hair braided and hanging over one shoulder, Lilias stood in the doorway. Her shift glowed a ghostly white.

“Go back to bed, Lilias. Ye’ll get a chill if ye dinna take care.” She would miss Lilias. Even though they had just met, she had taken an instant liking to her. The sweet lass was like the little sister she had always wanted.

“Ye are nay coming back to us, are ye? Ye are running from us forever.” Lilias crept closer, her bottom lip trembling into a pitiful frown. “Is it because I repeated what ye said about the duke and caused such a stir?” She clutched a fist to her chest. “I am so verra sorry. I…I know I should think afore I speak, but it seems I never remember until it’s too late.” Her worried look grew more pinched as she eyed Kenzie’s jacket and jeans. “Please dinna leave us,” she whispered. “I shall make everything right again. I promise.”

Kenzie stepped into her rubber boots and forced a kindly smile. “I have to go home, Lilias. Not because of anything ye said, but because…” How could she explain it so the dear lass would understand? “Because if I dinna leave, Bhaltair is going to cause trouble for me.” She attempted a lighthearted air. “Besides, I have to hurry home to feed my chickens and take care of my sheep. Just like ye take care of Henny.”

“Mathias will protect ye from Bhaltair,” Lilias argued. “He likes ye.” Her chin tucked as the golden glow of the candle revealed her shy smile. “I can tell by the way he looks at ye, ye ken? If ye stay, I feel sure he shall ask for yer hand. Would ye nay like to be his wife? He is so verra kind.” A quiet giggle escaped her. “And he is quite handsome. More so than many of the others. Do ye nay think him so?”

Lilias’s argument hurt like a physical blow. Did the poor girl not have a clue about her fate? “He is verra handsome and kind,” she agreed, already missing the stubborn medieval warrior who had wormed his way into her heart no matter how angry he made her. “But I’m pretty sure he’s promised to another.”

“I willna marry him,” Lilias stated, sounding a great deal more mature than before. “I dinna love Mathias. Well, I love him like a brother, but nay like a man I would wish to marry.” Her frown shifted to a stern scowl that was very much out of character. “Father willna hear of a match with the man I truly feel a warmth for. Swears he’s beneath me.” She lifted her chin. “I know I am not quite…right. But I still know who I love and dinna love. I’m also nay so daft as to think Mathias truly wishes to marry me any more than I wish to marry him.
